Age less with Metformin!

How metformin works for anti-aging
Metformin is primarily known as a medication used to manage type 2 diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels. However, its potential role in anti-aging has gained attention in recent years, particularly due to its effects on various metabolic pathways that are implicated in aging processes.
-
AMPK Activation: Metformin activates AMPK, a key cellular energy sensor. AMPK activation has been associated with several beneficial effects including improved insulin sensitivity, reduced inflammation and increased mitochondrial biogenesis, all of which are relevant to aging processes.
-
Sirtuin Pathway: Metformin has also been shown to activate certain pathways associated with longevity, such as the Sirtuin pathway. Sirtuins are a class of proteins involved in regulating cellular processes related to aging and longevity and their activation is associated with health benefits.
-
mTOR Inhibition: Metformin inhibits the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway, which plays a role in cell growth and proliferation. By inhibiting mTOR signaling, Metformin may help to promote cellular maintenance and longevity.

What is Metformin?
Metformin is a prescription medication primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus, a condition characterized by high blood sugar levels due to insulin resistance or inadequate insulin production. It belongs to the class of drugs known as biguanides. Metformin works by decreasing glucose production in the liver, improving insulin sensitivity in tissues, and reducing the absorption of glucose from the gastrointestinal tract. This leads to lower blood sugar levels and better control of diabetes. Metformin has also been prescribed off-label for its anti-aging effects, reduction of certain types of cancers and to promote weight loss.
How to take Metformin?
Metformin comes as an extended-release tablet and is taken once per day with food. It is recommended to take Metformin around the same time each day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully. Take Metformin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
What are the possible side effects of Metformin?
Metformin at the doses used for Anti-Aging is generally well-tolerated, although side effects can occur:
-
Gastrointestinal Upset: This is the most common side effect of Metformin therapy. This gastrointestinal upset includes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, bloating and gas. Taking the extended-release version will mitigate some of these side effects.
-
Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Long-term use of Metformin has been associated with reduced levels of vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, tingling or numbness in the extremities and cognitive difficulties.
-
Hypoglycemia: Metformin itself does not typically cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) but when combined with other diabetic medications that do lower blood sugar, such as insulin or sulfonylureas, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase.
-
Taste Changes: Some people may experience alterations in taste while taking Metformin, such as a metallic taste in the mouth.
-
Decreased Appetite: For some, a welcome side-effect is a decrease in appetite which may lead to weight loss.
-
Lactic Acidosis: Although rare, Metformin can potentially cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis, characterized by the buildup of lactic acid in the blood. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include weakness, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness, slow or irregular heartbeat, and stomach discomfort. Lactic acidosis is more likely to occur in individuals with kidney or liver problems, severe dehydration, or those taking certain medications.
What should I do if I miss a dose of Metformin?
If you forget to take your daily dose of Metformin, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should I store Metformin?
Keep this medication in the original container that you received it in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
